Mokokchung is a city in the Indian state of Nagaland . Mokokchung is the cultural capital of the Ao and the economically and politically most important urban center in northern Nagaland.
The city is the capital of the Mokokchung district . Mokokchung has the status of a Municipal Committee . The city is divided into 18 wards . It had 35,913 inhabitants on the cut-off date of the 2011 census, of which 18,898 were men and 17,015 were women. Christians make up the majority of the city's population with a share of over 86%. Hindus form a minority of over 11%. The literacy rate in 2011 was 94.6%, well above the national average. 83.5% belong to the Scheduled Tribes .
