Moliagul is a small administrative district in Victoria , Australia .

location

The place is about 200 km northwest of Melbourne and 60 km west of Bendigo . The Mount Moliagul significantly rises from the city visible and provides an excellent view of the surrounding country.

history

The name is probably derived from an abbreviation of the Aboriginal word "moliagulk", which means "wooden hill".

The area is known for its notable discoveries of gold nuggets , including the world's largest find, the Welcome Stranger nugget, found by John Deason and Richard Oates in 1869.

Once a prosperous gold prospecting town, today Moliagul is a ghost town with a few dilapidated houses. In 1855, 16,000 people lived in Moliagul at the height of the Victorian gold rush . The local post office opened on November 15, 1858 and closed in 1971.

The city consists of dilapidated apartments and small farms, a (now closed) hotel, a museum, the old school (now a hall) and a former church. There are numerous historical attractions, such as the stone monument to Reverend John Flynn , founder of the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia , who was born in Moliagul in 1880.

In the nearby cemetery there are tombstones of many families, such as those of the Deasion family, which date back to the times of the gold rush. In an area of a few kilometers there are many former gold digging sites, including that of the Welcome Stranger.
