Momodou E. Njie

Momodou E. Njie , often called Pa Njie (* 20th century; † February 3, 2020 ), was a Gambian imam and diplomat .

Life

Njie was born to Alhaji Ebou Njie from Daru Medina and Ajaratou Sey from Banjul. He grew up in Banjul and went to the Muhammadan School and the Crab Island School. Njie was fluent in English and Arabic, studied in Syria where he graduated from the Faculty of Literature at Damascus University . After his return to The Gambia in 1981 (according to another source 1980) he entered the service of the Gambian Foreign Ministry. He served on missions in Dakar , Jeddah , Riyadh and Doha . He began his service in Saudi Arabia , in the Gambian embassy in Saudi Arabia , he was first appointed second secretary, then first secretary and finally consul of the embassy. From 1992 to 1995 Njie was consul at the Gambian embassy in Dakar . He returned to Saudi Arabia as consul at the embassy and then as head of the chancellery. He was appointed the first consul general in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in 1998. In 2000 he was appointed Ambassador of the Gambia to Qatar and the Gulf States until 2002.

He later left active service with the rank of ambassador and has since been prominently represented as an imam on the committee of the Pipeline Mosque , the main mosque in Serrekunda, and was recognized by many in society.

In July 2016, President Yahya Jammeh appointed him Ambassador of the Gambia to Sengal. During the Gambian constitutional crisis of 2016–2017 , Njie was among the eleven or so ambassadors who issued a joint statement calling on President Jammeh to respect the December 1 presidential election result and to transfer power properly and peacefully to President-elect Adama Barrow to hand over. Jammeh then revoked Njie's appointment as ambassador to Senegal on December 27, 2016. After the change of government, Barrow reinstated the eleven ambassadors, including Njie.

He died in February 2020 and was buried the same day. He was married and had four children.
