The Momotombo is a stratovolcano in Nicaragua near the city of León . It reaches to Lake Managua . Its morphology is very symmetrical, its image was printed on matchboxes and appears on murales , it is emblematic of Nicaragua. Before the First World War it was a popular destination, in 1904 the number of tourists reached its peak, in 1905 it broke out. A geothermal field is located on its southern flank . The volcano can be climbed with a permit, including crossing the geothermal power plant . From the tree line onwards , the landscape changes constantly due to erosion and eruptions .

Under the dictatorship of Anastasio Somoza Debayle , the bodies of unpopular people were thrown into the Momotombo crater by the secret police and the national guard, where they were later discovered.

  • An eruption was recorded in 1522.
  • In 1609 there was an eruption, and due to numerous earthquakes, León Viejo was relocated to the place of today's Leon to Cabildo de indio Sutiaba in 1610 .
  • In 1764 it had a powerful eruption.
  • In 1870 it rattled violently.
  • In October 1885 a large amount of smoke rose and it rumbled every 15 minutes.
  • In February 1886, fire was observed in the crater during the nights.
  • On May 20, 1886, there was a violent outbreak of large amounts of smoke, ash and lava, some of which fell in the west of Managua.
  • On May 23, 1886, the cities of León, Chinandega and Corinto were completely covered by thick clouds of ash.
  • In 1905 there was an eruption with a lava flow.
  • Large amounts of smoke rose in April 1918.
  • In 2005 there was seismic activity of level 3 on the Richter scale .
  • On December 1, 2015 - after 110 years - there was another eruption. The volcano first ejected ash and gas - long columns of smoke rose - and then lava, which poured out onto uninhabited areas. At Christmas 2015 there were 20 light earthquakes, on January 2, 2016, in the early morning hours (local time) there was another brief eruption of lava that did not harm anyone.
  • Another eruption occurred on February 27, 2016.
