Mon Repos is a castle on Corfu with a large park , located on the Analipsis peninsula (also Kanoni peninsula ) slightly elevated above the Ionian Sea .

history

The neo-classical castle was built between 1828 and 1832 on behalf of the English governor of the Ionian Republic, Sir Frederick Adam , for whom it served as a summer residence from 1831 .

After the end of the British protectorate and the unification of the Ionian Islands with the Kingdom of Greece in 1864, the area was given to the Greek royal family for use and was given its current name. King Constantine II last lived in the castle before going into exile in 1967. It stood empty for a long time; It was not until 1994 that the site was awarded to the Greek state in a legal dispute before the European Court of Justice. The castle was renovated and the park was opened to visitors.

The castle now houses a museum . On the ground floor you can see some rooms with furnishings and paintings of the former residents. On the upper floor you can find information and excavation pieces about the beginnings of shipping around Corfu and about the excavation sites of the ancient settlement Paleopolis as well as about the botany of Corfu.

Mon Repos is best known for the fact that Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh , was born here in 1921 .

Kardaki Temple

The castle has a 25 hectare park with old trees. The "Steinsteg" is a popular bathing place for the Corfiots.

Within the park are the excavations of the ancient temple of Hera and the well-preserved Kardaki temple. Not much can be seen of the former 20 m × 40 m Hera temple. The Kardaki Temple takes its name from the spring of the same name, which was used for water supply in ancient times. When the spring suddenly dried up in 1822, research into the cause came across the temple.
