Monadnock Railroad

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Monadnock Railroad is a former railroad company based in Massachusetts and New Hampshire ( United States ). It existed as an independent company from 1848 to 1892.

history

The company was founded on December 13, 1848, but initially did not start building a line. In 1868 the founding of the company was renewed and a 24-kilometer standard-gauge railway line from Winchendon (Massachusetts) to Peterborough (New Hampshire) was planned. The line went into operation until 1871 .

The Boston, Barre and Gardner Railroad , which followed in a southerly direction in Winchendon , leased the small railway from October 1, 1874 for 99 years. In January 1880, however, the lease was transferred to the Cheshire Railroad, which also ran through Winchendon . After the Fitchburg Railroad had bought the Cheshire Railroad in 1890 and took over the contract with the Monadnock Railroad, it finally acquired the railway on September 28, 1892. From 1900, the railway was under the control of the Boston and Maine Railroad , which it shut down in sections in the 1970s and 1980s.
