Monday night skate

Monday Night Skate is a different Swiss performed cities Skate Night -Veranstaltung. The trips, organized on secured routes, take place every Monday between the end of April and the end of September every two to three weeks if the weather conditions are good.

The event is aimed at regular inline skating riders . The tours are 15 to 22 kilometers long and take around 2 hours. The event is organized by the NightSkate association . history

The event originated in Zurich in the late 1990s, when some inline skaters and roller skaters met regularly for an excursion. Over time, other participants joined them. The tours through downtown Zurich , which were still unorganized at the time , became an insider tip.

In order to give more weight to the safety aspect and to hold the previous scene meeting in an organized framework, the Monday Night Skate was launched in 1999 . The routes were predefined and the 1,500 participants at the time were accompanied by volunteers. These regulated the traffic during the event and pointed out any obstacles on the route.

In 2000, the city of Zurich was the first city in Switzerland to officially approve Monday Night Skate. From then on, the tours were accompanied by motorcyclists from the city ​​police . Over the years, the event has grown in popularity. While around 3,600 participants were counted in the 2000 season, one year later there were already over 17,000 and in 2002 a total of more than 33,500. In addition to Zurich, Monday Night Skate gained a foothold in Winterthur (today Cityskate ) and Bern (today Inline Night Bern ) in 2002 . In 2003, Basel, Lucerne and St. Gallen were added.

On the evening of July 14, 2003, a new record was set in Zurich with 8,600 skaters taking part. Overall, the event counted around 85,000 participants across Switzerland in the 2003 season, and a year later it was more than 101,000. In 2005 Monday Night Skate was extended to the cities of Aarau, Baden (today RegioSkate ), Biel, Chur, Kreuzlingen and in 2006 to Geneva and Zug, while at the end of 2005 the cities of Winterthur, Bern and Baden separated from Monday Night Skate and since then have carried out independent inline skating trips. Overall, the number of participants throughout Switzerland has stabilized in recent years at a level of around 100,000 participants per year (as of 2007).
