Monika Felten (born February 1, 1965 in Preetz , Schleswig-Holstein) is a German children's book and fantasy author . She is considered one of the most successful German fantasy authors.

Life

After completing secondary school and one year at a home economics school in Kiel, Felten learned the profession of technical draftsman, which she practiced until the birth of her first son in 1992. The focus of her work was the classic construction drawings, but also perspective drawings for documentation on the drawing board or with the CAD system. A restructuring measure of the company in 1994 resulted in the loss of a job while on parental leave.

As early as the fourth and fifth grade she wrote stories about elves , which she illustrated with wafers . Felten gave up writing and the desire to become a writer, but in the 7th grade, because she was wrongly informed that a degree in German or journalism was necessary in order to take up this profession.

She has been reading fantasy passionately since she was 15 and began writing her first book Elfenfeuer in 1998, two years after the birth of her second son Nico . The first 100 pages of the novel were written within a year. 17 publishers received a reading sample. After only six weeks, the Stuttgart-based Weitbrecht Verlag registered interest. 18 months of writing followed, during which Elfenfeuer took shape in collaboration with the editor of Weitbrecht-Verlag.
