Monito ( Spanish Isla Monito ) is an uninhabited island in the Caribbean Sea belonging to Puerto Rico . Administratively, it belongs together with the neighboring and much larger island of Mona to the Puerto Rican community Mayagüez , within it to the municipality ( barrio ) Isla de Mona e Islote Monito . Monito is the masculine diminutive of Mona, the name of their neighboring island.

Monito is 5.2 km northwest of Mona and around 70 km west of the main island in the Mona Passage that separates Puerto Rico from Hispaniola . The approximately rectangular shaped island is 480 m long, 360 m wide and has an area of 0.147 km². The island rises steeply from the sea and forms a plateau that reaches a height of 66 m above sea level in the northeast. It is the western landmass of the state of Puerto Rico.
The island is a nature reserve ("Monito Island Natural Reserve") and is home to the Monito gecko ( Sphaerodactylus micropithecus ), an endangered, endemic species.
