Monkey: Journey to the West

Monkey: Journey to the West is an opera by Damon Albarn .

The opera, choreographed by Chen Shi-Zheng, premiered on June 28, 2007 to mark the opening of the Manchester International Festival . It is a co-production of the Manchester Festival, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin and the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. "Monkey" is a mixture of Peking Opera and modern circus, based on the classic Chinese story Journey West .

Reviews

The premiere reviews were split. The Guardian had an anthemic review and one in which the author v. a. disappointed with what he thought was unimaginative music. The spectators, however, were without exception enthusiastic.

Performances took place between 2007 and 2009 in Paris , Charleston and London . The Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden canceled the performance planned for 2008. The co-production partner in Paris, the Théâtre du Châtelet , did not deliver a technically or artistically feasible version of the lavish stage show.
