Monkwearmouth is a district ( area ) of Sunderland in north east England .
history
674 the river was on the banks Wear the monastery Monkwearmouth founded with the Church of St. Peter. In 794 the place was invaded by Vikings , in 860 it was destroyed by the Danes .
A hard coal mine was opened here in the 19th century, and this shaped the life of the place for over a hundred years. There was also shipbuilding. The colliery closed in 1993. The University of Sunderland campus and the Stadium of Light football stadium were built on the site . The former train station was closed in 1968 by the Beeching ax and turned into a museum.
