Wir sind die Flut is a German science fiction and mystery film from 2016. Funded by the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg with 100,000 euros , the film was created as part of the Leuchtstoff initiative, produced by Anna Wendt Film in coproduction with the Baden Film Academy -Wuerttemberg , the Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf and the Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (rbb).

The film had its world premiere on February 19, 2016 at the 66th Berlinale . It was released in theaters on November 10, 2016.

action

15 years ago the sea disappeared off the coast of Windholm. Since then, an oppressive calm has radiated on the surroundings, raises questions and causes discomfort. The cause of the anomaly remains unclear to this day. The day the sea receded, the children of the village disappeared too. But it is unclear whether the children really drowned then; in any case, their bodies were never found.

With a new theory, the ambitious physics student Micha applies to an internal commission for the rare research assignments at the university. After years of work, however, he has to experience how his daring project fails because of the ossified system - he is not allowed to continue his project. Frustrated, Micha steals a suitcase with measuring devices and, against the instructions of his doctoral supervisor, Professor Feuerstein, sets off to Windholm to check his hypothesis on his own. He is accompanied by his ex-girlfriend Jana, the daughter of his boss, who wants to drop out of her physics degree.

With the help of forged permits, the two of them penetrate the area that has been cordoned off by the military. There, the young researchers try to substantiate Micha's hypothesis with the help of gravimetric measurements, but encounter resistance from the remaining villagers. After their equipment is sabotaged on this side of the fence, Micha and Jana set off with protective suits in the mysterious tidal flats. However, there they cannot detect any deviation in gravity.

Micha and Jana are supported in their examinations by Hanna, the daughter of the landlord Sophie. Finally, it turns out that the mysterious force that causes the water to recede originates from a point on land. There lies the grave of Matti, a schoolboy who died shortly before the sea disappeared after a long illness. Micha discovers a mysterious connection between himself and the dead boy, who finally appears to him even in the mudflats.

Under the increasing influence of Matti and the mysterious power, Micha finally goes to the mudflats without a protective suit and seems to disappear there like the children before. The villagers appear liberated by the events and tear down the protective fence on the beach. Some time later Jana meets Micha, who has returned, in Berlin.

background

The film was shot from November 2nd to December 7th 2014 in Berlin , in the villages of Immerath (Erkelenz) and Borschemich , which have since fallen victim to lignite mining, and on Pellworm .

The exploitation rights to this film were bought up by the student producers. This is not common in the film production value chain .

production

Under the wing of Anna Wendt Filmproduktion GmbH, the film was the first co-production of a full-length feature film between two German film schools, the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg and the Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf, as part of a total of ten diploma theses in November to December 2014 in Berlin , Erkelenz , shot on Pellworm and in Lübbecke .

Trivia

  • The fictional village of Windholm is not actually on the North Sea . Since the landscape of the North Sea island of Pellworm , on which all the sea scenes were filmed, did not have the desired setting, the film team resorted to digital tricks. All the shooting that tells the village in the final film was actually carried out in Immerath (Erkelenz) and Borschemich in North Rhine-Westphalia . In order to suggest one and the same location to the viewer later, however, in post-production the two locations were connected to a fictitious location through appropriate film editing and numerous VFX effects.
  • During filming in the village of Immerath (Erkelenz) , the production office was broken into, which was used to store technology, costumes and props. A sewing machine and three lipsticks were stolen.
  • During the shooting on the North Sea island of Pellworm , the film team refueled the only petrol station on site due to the numerous production vehicles. Replenishment had to be obtained in petrol cans from the ferry. The islanders took it with humor.
  • The kilometer-long fence that separates the sea from the village of Windholm in the film was digitally extended in post-production . The fence that actually existed during the shooting was only 15 meters long and was located in the center of the jetty.
  • During the development phase of the script , the team was largely advised by the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg in the course of their physical research on the basis of a realistic representation of the gravitational anomaly. Out of gratitude, the doctoral supervisor of the protagonist Micha was given the name of the advising person, “Prof. Feuerstein "baptized.
