Monoclea is the only genus of the order Monocleales within the liverwort . There is one species in New Zealand and one in South America . This distribution suggests that this genus has existed since Gondwana times.
description
The gametophyte is thallous and up to 20 centimeters long. The capsule stands on a long stem. It opens with a longitudinal crack, hence the name Monoclea . Although the thallus is very simply built, the genus is placed in the class Marchantiopsida due to the structure of the oil body cells and the monolayer of the capsule wall .
species
- Monoclea forsteri Hook. in New Zealand
- Monoclea gottschei Lindb. in South America
The genus was temporarily led as a separate subclass Monocleidae. Due to the blepharoplast structure, the connection between sporophyte and gametophyte and the results of molecular genetic investigations, however, it was included in the subclass Marchantiidae .
