The Mons Piton is an island mountain on the moon .

The name is derived from the French term for "mountain peak". In the documents of the IAU , the name is derived from a mountain called Piton on the "Tenerife Islands". This is a mix-up. The name was originally introduced in 1864 by the English astronomer John Lee , who counted the summit among the Montes Teneriffe . The name itself is generic, similar to the Mons Pico named by Johann Hieronymus Schroeter (here using the Spanish word for "summit").

Mons Piton has a diameter of around 25 km at the base and protrudes from the Mare Imbrium , between the Montes Alpes and the Montes Apenninus .
