13.21

Piazzi Smyth is a small impact crater on the northern front of the moon in the Mare Imbrium plain . In the southeast lies the Mons Piton , in the east the edge of the Mare Imbrium with the Montes Alpes and the Cassini crater . In the south is Aristillus and in the southwest the small crater Kirch . The crater is bowl-shaped and the rim is only slightly eroded.

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the Scottish astronomer Charles Piazzi Smyth .
