Monster Hunter Freedom , also known as Monster Hunter Portable (USA), is a video game that combines adventure , hack and slay and RPG elements. The aim of the game is to complete quests that the player can get from various NPCs and thus become a famous and respected hunter. It is the third part in the Monster Hunter series and based on the second part of the series, Monster Hunter G . Monster Hunter Freedom includes some changes that allow players to complete the quests on their own.

As of September 2006, 650,000 copies were sold in Japan, making it the best-selling PSP game in Japan. Together with his successor, both were sold a million times each by 2007.

Gameplay

As with its predecessors, this game is about completing quests, collecting materials and developing into a powerful hunter. The rarer the materials collected, the stronger the equipment they make.

A main attraction of Monster Hunter is to find rarer items in order to create even more elaborate weapons and armor. However, since certain materials appear with different frequencies in the same quests, the constant repetition of the same quests is an integral part of the game. However, it is very difficult to defeat a stronger opponent simply by attacking repeatedly without special tactics.

The game also includes a variety of armor and twelve major weapon groups:
sword and shield, great sword, long sword, double blades, lance, rifle lance, hammer, hunting horn, bow and (light or heavy) crossbow.

Each weapon has its own style and advantages and disadvantages. It is also possible for the player to create his own hunter at the start of the game (name, gender, face, hairstyle, hair color, voice etc.). You have to hunt everything from small grazers to giant dragons and collect the material to create new armor and weapons.

Changes

Monster Hunter Portable contains some changes to Monster Hunter, the European version contains even more changes to Monster Hunter Portable (in Europe Monster Hunter Freedom) (online multiplayer ).

Changes to Monster Hunter

The game is based on Monster Hunter Freedom Unite . It contains a much larger arsenal, armor and other changes and expansions:

  • create and improve new weapons,
  • more branches on the paths,
  • new "sharpness level": blue, white and purple, with purple being the highest "sharpness level",
  • more armor,
  • many tank improvements were changed,
  • new "Wyvern (dragons)" ("Yian Garuga") and new color versions of the old types,
  • a “Felyne kitchen” and the possibility of employing Felyne cooks
  • new items,
  • "G-rank quests" that contain even stronger "wyverns" than the "high-level quests",
  • a “Kokoto Farm”, where you can grow plants, fish, mine ore, catch beetles, collect herbs, etc. The ore is needed, for example, to make armor and weapons.

Changes to Monster Hunter Portable

Monster Hunter Freedom suffers from some major changes from its Japanese counterpart:

  • Downloadable quests are not inherently possible.
  • Hunters do not need to connect to Monster Hunter 2 to complete the quest "Revenge of Yian Garuga".
  • Blood Censorship: A lot of blood has been removed, but more blood still appears when hitting a monster's weak point.

Hunter rank

The hunter rank ( JR or HR ) indicates how many quests you have available in the guild hall. There are six different ranks achievable, each activating some new multiplayer online quests. Each hunter rank can be achieved either by completing certain guild quests or by doing the slightly more demanding, more difficult "Urgent Quests".

It is predefined which quest you have to complete in order to unlock the urgent quest . Completion of these increases the player's hunter rank by 1 and they have access to new difficult quests which, if completed, lead to an urgent quest again .

Monster Hunter Freedom 2

Monster Hunter Freedom 2 is the implementation of Monster Hunter 2 for the PlayStation Portable . Monster Hunter Freedom 2 is about defeating monsters in a certain time limit in order to obtain materials, with these materials you can in turn build stronger armor and weapons to defeat even more dangerous monsters. There are the same monsters as the predecessor, as well as new and unique beings. The better you get, the higher the so-called hunter rank . A high hunter rank makes it possible to do quests that were not previously available. The quests are divided into village chief quests (single player), training quests (single / multiplayer), treasure hunt quests (single / multiplayer), offline quests (single player) and online quests (multiplayer). The offline and online quests are the same except for the fact that you can do them online with four people, offline you have to do them alone. In the training quests you have to choose a given weapon and armor and not faint (lose a life). An exact goal in this game cannot be defined, but there are monsters that the player should have defeated in the end. Treasure hunt quests could only be played by two people in Monster Hunter Freedom's multiplayer mode, but in MHF2 you can now do them alone. MHF2 is multiplayer-capable with a maximum of four players via WLAN (in ad-hoc mode) of the PSP. Furthermore, downloadable content is available (new quests, bonus objects, etc.) which can be downloaded using the infrastructure mode of the PSP. In addition, the special quest level of Yian Garuga has been reduced and is already playable at level 4 of the village chief from MHF2. Also new are the rifle lance, the bow, the hunting horn and the long sword. The special abilities and attacks of the individual weapons are:

Gun lance: The gun lance is a further developed form of the normal lance from MHF1, with O you shoot a projectile depending on the type of weapon, which you reload with O while holding down the Block key (R). With the triangle button you stab forward normally. The most powerful ability, which takes around five minutes to recharge, is Wyvern Fire, where the player must press the Block, O and Triangle buttons at the same time. Then a flame appears at the tip of the lance which turns blue and then detonates in an explosion.

Bow: a light long-range weapon that has an infinite supply of arrows with up to three different levels of charge and shooting abilities.

Pierce: Penetrates the target and causes different amounts of damage depending on the level. Penetrates thin parts of the wyvern or the enemy and causes damage when hit behind the target.

Scattered: Depending on the LVL, the shooter shoots a different number of arrows that only have a short range (stackable). Fast: fast shot for any enemy type but not really effective against wyverns.

Hunting horn: Subclass of the hammer, which can cause more damage if you hit correctly, with O a weak poke attack is carried out, with triangle a strong swing attack that can be infinite similar to the greatsword (interruptions excluded) and with both at the same time a powerful earth shaker attack executed, which can also bring Pisces-Wyvern out of the earth. The special ability of the hunting horn is the song, while the player plays songs that can have various improvements in status values, healing, or special effects for him or his fellow players.

Long sword: In contrast to the great sword, the long sword does not have a block function, but this is more than compensated for by the other advantages of this weapon: It is lighter than its large equivalent and therefore the player can move very quickly with it (normal running speed as with a stowed one Weapon), the attacks take place very quickly on each other (triangle, triangle = two vertical blows, then O for a forward stab) and to compensate for the lack of blocking function, the Elan bar was built in, which is filled up a little with every hit from this weapon. If the elan bar is full, the player's attack power increases (varies from weapon to weapon) and powerful Elan combos can be carried out by successively pressing the R key.

Quests

The game contains different types of quests. The first are simple gathering quests (gathering, combining, searching) and killing quests (usually hunting several carnivores). But the most important are the hunting quests. In these you mainly have to hunt the big monsters. You can defeat them as well as catch them. The hunting quests are divided into smaller groups. B. has to defeat two monsters of the same kind, so-called infinite quests - if you kill or capture a monster, a new one appears. There were catch quests in Monster Hunter Freedom, but they were not continued in the subsequent series. Finally the epic and difficult quests. In the epic, there are two or more types of monsters of different races. The hard quests are hard hunting quests. The main task is to defeat Elders of Dragons. Elder dragons are very difficult to defeat, almost all of them have abnormal powers. There is also the protection quest in which the fort has to be protected from giant monsters like the Lao Shan Lung.
