Montacuta is agenus of mussels in the lentil mussel family(Montacutidae). It is the type genus of the lentil mussel family (Montacutidae). The oldest fossil representatives of the genus come from the Eocene .

features

The same-hinged housing is egg-shaped to oblong-egg-shaped and approximately rectangular. It becomes about nine millimeters long. It is unequal, the orthogyrate vertebra sits behind the middle of the length of the case. The lock or lock plate is bent. In the right flap there is an inclined cardinal tooth and a deep pit in the lock plate in front of the cardinal tooth. In the left valve there is an anterior, elongated, laminar tooth and a pit in the lock plate under the vertebra. Back teeth are absent. The ligament is usually internal and behind the vertebrae. The resilifer is oblong-egg-shaped, stands obliquely behind the vertebrae. The sphincter impressions are somewhat elongated and irregular. The surface line is without a sine.

The ornamentation consists of growth strips parallel to the edge and radial lines; the latter are often absent. The peristracum is thin and looks polished.

Geographical distribution, habitat and way of life

The species of the genus Montacuta are mainly distributed arctic-circumboreal. In the Atlantic, the distribution area extends south to the Mediterranean. They occur from the tidal range to about 600 meters water depth. The species mostly live commensally with byssus threads attached in the anal area of echinoderms.

Taxonomy

The genus was established in 1822 by William Turton . Type species is Ligula substriata Montagu, 1808 by subsequent determination. Montacuta Turton, 1822 is the type genus of the Montacutidae family. However, this has not always been recognized as an independent family. Therefore, Montacuta is also found in the older literature in the families of the Ericynidae, Kelliidae and Lasaeidae.

The MolluscaBase currently (2016) provides 19 recent species of the genus Montacuta . There is also an uncertain number of fossil species. Most of the fossil species have not yet been processed in a modern way. They may now have to be assigned to other genera of the Montacutidae that have been newly established since then.

The position of Montacuta acuminata EA Smith, 1885 in the genus Montacuta is uncertain. Montacuta chalcedonica Carpenter, 1857, Montacuta convexa Monterosato, 1875 and Montacuta obtusa Carpenter, 1865 are (currently) nomina dubia.
