Montagu Square

Montagu Square is a square in London district of Marylebone . It is north of Marble Arch and measures approximately 225 mx 40 m.

The square was built in the Portman Estate from 1810 to 1815 along with Bryanston Square to the west . The builder and first owner, David Porter, named the square after his lover Elizabeth Montagu . Art historian John Summerson describes the square as "a dull, monotonous regiment of brick houses".

local residents

The entrepreneur Henry Grissell , the adventurer Hester Stanhope and the writer Anthony Trollope (from 1873 in No. 39) lived in Montagu Square .

No. 34 was acquired by Beatles drummer Ringo Starr in 1965 and later rented to Paul McCartney and Jimi Hendrix . In 1968, John Lennon and Yoko Ono moved in , who shot the media-debated nude photo Two Virgins , the cover photo for their album Unfinished Music No.1: Two Virgins , in the apartment . Lennon also worked there on the Beatles double album The Beatles (album) .
