Montanari is an impact crater to the southwest of the lunar front , west of Tycho crater . The very heavily eroded, barely discernible crater rim touches the rim of the larger Wilhelm crater in the north and the also heavily eroded Lagalla in the northwest .

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the Italian astronomer and lens grinder Geminiano Montanari .
