task
Accompanying the carrier combat groups of the US Navy in peacetime, their task in the event of a crisis was to combat the enemy's strategic submarines. In their battle structure they were adapted to the respective theater of war. The operational squadrons were either formed from the stock of the neighboring fleets (7th Squadron - Northern Fleet , 10th Squadron - Pacific Fleet ) or by delegation from all fleets (5th and 8th Squadron) and consisted mainly of surface forces. In 1992 the 5th and 8th, in 1998 the 10th and in 2005 the 7th squadron were disbanded after a new threat analysis.
