The ortobene is a granite mountain in the east of the town of Nuoro in the same province on Sardinia , about seven kilometers from the provincial capital. A road meanders around the mountain as a loop. Between macchia with pines , holm oaks and cypresses there are picnic areas near two springs.
The marked hiking trail no. 8 crosses the road to Cuccuru Nieddu, which at 955 m is the highest point of the Ortobe. The viewing platform has been dominated by the seven-meter-high bronze statue of Redentore (Redeemer) created by the sculptor Vincenzo Jerace since 1901. At the end of August, during the Sagra del Redentore , the festival of the Redeemer, a procession, one of the most colorful on the island, moves from the city to the mountain.
