The Montenegro door snail ( Montenegrina cattaroensis ) is a species of snail from the family of door snails (Clausiliidae), which belongs to the subordination of land snails (Stylommatophora).

features

The housing is relatively slim and tall, it has 12 to 13 turns. It measures up to about 2.5 cm in height and max. 5 mm. The last four turns only increase a little in width, so the flanks run almost parallel to each other. The turns are flattened on the outside, almost straight; as a result, the seams are only slightly deepened. The surface is almost smooth, only weak growth lines are formed, which are a little stronger on the last turn. The transversely oval mouth protrudes slightly beyond the last turn, the edge of the mouth is widened, curved outwards and has sharp edges. In the mouth and the last turn there are some folds of the inside wall of the case, which are called main, moon and palate folds and belong to the "clausillary", the locking device of the case, from which the family got its name. This complicated locking device allows the animal to close the housing when it is withdrawn with the clausilium , a lid on an elastic handle that is attached to the spindle of the housing. The color of the case is light yellow to horn-colored; it usually gets a little darker towards the tip. Empty cases are translucent.

Occurrence, distribution and way of life

Little is known about the way of life of the Montenegro door snail. So far, it has only been found in Montenegro, particularly near the city of Kotor .

Systematics

Emil Adolf Roßäßler quotes "Ziegl." As the author of the species, but the description of the species is (probably incorrectly) only attributed to Roßäßler. It was later determined to be the type species of the genus Montenegrina established by Boettger in 1877 . The genus Montenegrina currently contains over 20 species that are native to the Balkans as far as Greece.
