Montgomery Ward was an American record label of the catalog mail order chain of the same name . In 1933, Montgomery Ward began a business relationship with the Victor Records label to re-publish their appearances on their own label. Montgomery Ward records were only sold in the catalogs of the mail order company and associated stores.

history

Montgomery Ward's label activities began in 1932 and in June 1933 a contract was signed with Victor that allowed the company to release recordings of Victor and later his sub-label Bluebird Records on their own label. The label-label look of the plates was plain; first yellow-brown plates with red letters were produced, then from October 1933 black plates with gold letters were produced. Montgomery Ward not only published Victor recordings of all genres, but also had the records made by Victor. While the main series of the label mainly included old-time and country , blues and other popular music such as jazz and swing as well as gospel , there was also the 6000 series, which was intended for classical music.

A large part of the actual Bluebird recordings were never published on Bluebird, but instead moved straight to Montgomery Ward. There are always gaps in the label's catalog - these numbers were not used and remained free.

Although Montgomery Ward's material was largely from Victor's inventory, there were also releases from other labels. The 1000 series contained Crown Master and some Montgomery Ward records were pressed with Decca recordings (1935/1936 and 1939). In 1940 recordings were also released by Varsity Records.

In December 1941, Montgomery Ward's collaboration with Victor ended and the label was discontinued.
