The Three Tobacco Tags , later just Tobacco Tags , were an American old-time band from North Carolina .
Career
The Tobacco Tags were founded in 1931 by Henry Luther "Luke" Baucom (born December 18, 1902 ) from McDowell County and Edgar Reidsumy (born June 9, 1903 ) from Gaston County . In May 1931, Samuel Lee Pridgen (born February 13, 1910 ) from Henderson found the group. With the recording of Pridgen, Tobacco Tags began playing their music on the WPTF broadcaster in Raleigh on their show The Songs of the Tobacco Tags . Her repertoire was a mix of novelty and sentimental titles.
From 1936 the band could be heard every day on WPTF. Pridgen, who had switched to the Swing Billies , was replaced by George Wade on the mandolin . The group had already made their first recordings for Champion Records in 1932 and thanks to their popularity, the Tobacco Tags now got the chance to record songs with Bluebird Records , which they did well into the 1940s. In 1938 the group was expanded to include two former Swing Billies members, while George Wade left again. On one of their Bluebird sessions, the band also accompanied harmonica virtuoso Gwen Foster on his last recordings, including a version of the Side Line Blues .
In the late 1930s and early 1940s, the Tobacco Tags had moved to Richmond , Virginia , where they performed on WRVA and were part of the ensemble of WRVA's successful Old Dominion Barn Dance .
The Tobacco Tags separated in 1949. Luther Baucom died in 1968.
