Monumenta Historica Societatis Iesu

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Monumenta Historica Societatis Iesu ( MHSI ; Historical Monuments of the Society of Jesus ) are a collection of critical editions of documents on the origins and early years of the Society of Jesus ( Societas Jesu , order abbreviation : SJ ), including the writings of Ignatius von Loyola , theirs Founder.

The 24th General Congregation of the Society of Jesus (1892) recommended to the newly elected Superior General Luis Martín to renew the older tradition of historiography after the abolition of the Jesuit order (1773). However, by the 19th century, historical research methods had made significant advances. Luis Martin therefore decided to start the ambitious project of systematically publishing critical editions of documents on the origins of society. A group of experts was put together and published the first volume of the MHSI in Madrid as early as 1894 . With the establishment of the Historical Institute of the Society of Jesus ( IHSI ) in Rome (1930), the work of the MHSI continued. The proximity to the archives of the order made the work easier.
