Morehshin Allahyari ( Persian : موره شین اللهیاری; born 1985 ) is an Iranian media artist and activist based in Brooklyn , New York .

Her work questions current political, sociocultural and gender-specific norms, with a particular focus on the relationship between technology and artistic activism.

Life

Allahyari was born in Tehran, Iran during the First Gulf War . She was interested in art even as a child. Between the ages of 12 and 18, she took a weekly creative writing class and discovered the importance of storytelling for herself. This became the starting point of her artistic work. Allahyari studied from 2003 to 2007 at the University of Tehran , where she received her Bachelor of Arts in social and media studies . From 2007 to 2009 she studied at the University of Denver and earned a Master of Arts in Digital Media Studies. There she conducted research with Lynn Schofield Clark at the Estlow International Center for Journalism and New Media. From 2010 to 2012, Allahyari attended the University of North Texas , where she and David Stout initiated the research cluster Initiative for Advanced Research in Technology and the Arts (iARTA) and received a Master of Fine Arts in New Media Art.

Works

Allahyari's work includes 3D printed objects, videos, experimental animation, web art and publications. She is best known for her projects Material Speculation: ISIS (2016), a series of 3D-printed sculptural reconstructions of ancient artifacts destroyed by IS (2015-2016), and The 3D Additivist Manifesto and Cookbook (2015-2016). As a research resident at Eyebeam, Allahyari also worked on a project on digital colonialism in 2017 - a term she has been coining since 2015.
