history

From the document “illa eclesiam de Moreira” from 1100 and another document from 1103, the first mention of Moreira, as a village in the Zurara area, near Santar, emerges. In other documents from the year 1258 the place is mentioned as Moreira, Moraria as well as Moreyra de Jusaa (today: Moreira de Baixo) and Moreira de Sussa (today: Moreira de Cima).

At that time of 1258, Moreira belonged to Senhorim County, with later documents counting the Moreira de Baixo area to Aguieira County. The district is mentioned in 1514 as "Vila Nova das Amoreiras".

The name Moreira was the name of the mulberry trees (Morus) at that time. The name additions Jusaa and Susaa come from the old Portuguese adjectives "jusão" and "susão" (feminine: "jusã" e "susã"), which indicate the location. These are comparable with the name suffixes "Ober-" and "Unter-" known in German.

In the second half of the 18th century, the two brothers and later bishops of Beja Manuel Pires de Azevedo Loureiro and António Pires de Azevedo Loureiro were born in Moreira (de Baixo).

In 1986 Moreira became an independent municipality (Freguesia).

On September 29, 2013, the merger of the two neighboring communities Moreira and Santar came into force, through which the community "União de Freguesias de Santar e Moreira" emerged. This amalgamation was carried out as part of the reforms of the Portuguese administrative apparatus, which are an immediate response to the country's economic crisis.
