history

John Morgan , who resided at Balgay House , had made his fortune in India. He bequeathed parts of his fortune to a foundation that was to build and operate a hospital based on the model of Heriot's Hospital in Edinburgh . After legal disputes, the Morgan Hospital was finally built between 1863 and 1868 to a design by Scottish architects John Dick Peddie and Charles Kinnear . The facility was opened on February 5, 1868.

In his will, Morgan provided additional resources to educate and support children from poor families. In 1868, 90 students were initially accepted. In 1888 the Morgan Hospital and school were closed. Since the state, free school system was already sufficiently developed at this time, the city education committee decided to set up a paid school. In 1889, after some redesigns in the former Morgan Hospital, the Morgan Academy was opened, initially combining elementary and secondary schools under one roof. Between 1913 and 1915, the Morgan Academy was expanded to a design by James H. Langland .

The good reputation of the secondary school developed over the decades. In order to focus on this, it was decided to close the primary school. The last elementary school students were admitted in 1955. Again in 1992 a comprehensive extension was realized on the north flank. A fire on March 21, 2001 devastated the historic main building. It was reopened in August 2004. In the course of the work, the building was demolished, with the exception of the outer walls, and the interior was rebuilt in a contemporary, functional form.
