Maurice James Dixon (born February 6, 1929 in Christchurch , New Zealand , † July 29, 2004 in Christchurch) was a New Zealand rugby union player on the position of the outer three quarters .

He made his debut in 1948 at the age of 19 in the provincial selection of the Canterbury RFU . His next assignment for Canterbury followed again in 1951. Two years later he had the breakthrough when he won the Ranfurly Shield against the Wellington RFU with his province in 1953 . Canterbury was able to successfully defend the Shield 23 times by 1956. Due to his achievements, he also played for the first time for the South Island selection (three times in total) in the same year . At the end of the year he was named to the squad of the New Zealand national team (All Blacks) for their 1953 and 1954 tour of Europe . On this tour he played in four of the five internationals against England , France , Ireland and Scotland . Dixon made his international debut on January 9, 1954 in a 14-3 win over Ireland.

In 1955 he missed a nomination for the national team. His greatest triumph in rugby followed a year later when he won the international series with the All Blacks against the South African national team (Springboks) touring New Zealand . It was the first defeat of the Springboks in an international series at all. The New Zealanders won three of their four internationals and lost one. Dixon played in all four internationals and scored a try in the third . He also managed a victory over the touring South Africans with Canterbury.

In 1957 he toured with the All Blacks in Australia , where they won all 13 games. Dixon played in the two internationals against the Australian national team . Since the New Zealanders won the two games, they were able to successfully defend the Bledisloe Cup . The following year he ended his active career in rugby.
