Morta

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Morta is the Latinized name of the Greek goddess of fate Moira in Roman mythology .

In Livius Andronicus Odusia , a translation of Homer's Odyssey into Latin, Morta is the one who foretells the day of death. The fact that Morta is only a translation for Moira was first noted by Aulus Gellius in the 2nd century and is considered certain because of the same root word for both names. The classification of the Morta under the Parcae next to Nona and Decima is a construct of the lexicographer Caesellius Vindex , which, according to Gellius, has already been refuted by Varro . Morta is therefore not assigned any importance in the Roman religion .
