Morten Søndergaard (born October 3, 1964 in Copenhagen ) is a Danish writer, translator, literary editor and sound artist .

life and work

Morten Søndergaard attended the writers' school (Forfatterskolen) in Copenhagen from 1989 to 1991 and then studied comparative literature . Together with Tomas Thøfner, he was editor of the literary magazine Hvedekorn from 2002 to 2008 . He is co-founder of the poetry magazine Øverste Kirurgiske . In 2003 and 2007 he was nominated for the Nordic Council's Literature Prize. His books have been translated into Arabic, English, German, French, Italian, Swedish and Serbian.

Søndergaard made his debut in 1992 with Sahara i mine hænder . In his poetry he tries new ways to represent language. He combines them in his exhibitions and installations with sound elements and experiments similarly in his musical and dramatic works. Søndergaard has translated several works by the Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges into Danish.

Together with his wife, the writer Merete Pryds Helle, he wrote some crime novels under the pseudonym of the fictional blind author Liv Dunkle, including Falken og falkoneren (2008) and Næsten levende (2012).

In 1996 Søndergaard's volume of poetry Ubestemmelsessteder ( places of indeterminacy ) was published. The topic is the urban social fabric, “anchored in the streets and squares of Copenhagen, which are often mentioned by name. The exemplary content of the scenes leads, on the one hand, to a delocalization, in particular because the lyrical self presents itself as a speech-reflecting observer, on the other hand, a coat of solidarity with the urban outsiders seems to be evident. "

With Bier dor sovende ( Bees Die in Sleep , 1998), Søndergaard's poetry became accessible to a wider public. The book was awarded the Michael Strunge Prize and was translated into German in 2007. It allows the reader to create surreal and hyperreal images and, not without humor, enriches the imagination, with the result that a different view of the world arises. Time and movement are the subject of his collection of poems Vinci, senere ( Vinci, later , 2002). Søndergaard had lived in the Italian town of Vinci for several years.

Søndergaard created numerous sound installations. This is how his Stenklaver (stone piano ) was created in 2005 . In the radio play Monte Altissimo - Falling off the White Mountain , performed in 2004 in the radio play workshop ( DeutschlandRadio Berlin ) , Søndergaard worked with recordings from a marble quarry near the city of Carrara . His sound installation Stenvasken was exhibited in 2004 in the Museum of Contemporary Art (Museet for Samtidskunst) in Roskilde and Verdensnødbremse (World Emergency Brake) in 2007 in the Art Museum in Esbjerg .

Søndergaard's Wordpharmacy , which he created in 2012 with designer Christian Ramsø , is a language and art object in which science and art have been linked . This poetological experiment with the title “word pharmacy” consists of ten drug boxes, each for a word class, for example for verbs or adverbs . The respective instruction leaflet explains the use, dangers of overdose, etc.; For example, with the adjectives it says “Children under two years of age can only use adjectives with the consent of their parents”. The poet Jan Wagner wrote a foreword to these leaflets under the title The Syllables, the Salves .
