Rav Moshe Danon was Grand Rabbi of the Sephardim of Sarajevo from 1815 to 1830 .

In 1820, Moshe Danon and ten higher-ranking members of the Jewish community were charged with murdering a local dervish who had turned away from Judaism and converted to Islam . Danon was threatened with the death penalty, which, however, would not be carried out if a jizya of 500,000 groschen was paid . The Jewish community of Sarajevo could not raise the requested sum of money and asked the local Muslim population for their help. The Muslim population stormed the prison and freed Rabbi Moshe Danon and the Jewish community members imprisoned with him.

Danon went on a pilgrimage in 1830 . He wanted to travel from Dubrovnik to the Holy Land on a ship , but died in a coffee house in Stolac due to illness .

Moshe Danon's grave is located a few kilometers west of Stolac in the village of Ošanjići . It was visited by Jewish pilgrims on the first Sunday in July every year until the Holocaust .
