Münsterkantorei Ulm is the organizational and content-related collective term for all choirs at Ulm Minster . Above all, the motet choir is known beyond Ulm , and its duties as the house choir of the Ulm Minster include, in addition to the concert performances in the Ulm Minster and the Ulm Paulus Church, also singing in the church services in the Minster. The motet choir of the Münsterkantorei was founded in 1956 by Münsterkantor Hans Jakob Haller and directed until 1971. Subsequently, the line was in the hands of Edgar Rabsch (1972–1990) and KMD Friedrich Fröschle (1991–2009).

Oratorio works are just as much a part of the selection as a cappella literature. The choirs receive regular group and individual voice training. Rehearsal weekends and concert tours (2011 to Schleswig-Holstein, 2014 to Dresden and Leipzig, 2016 to Austria) also slow down the choir work. In the past few years the Motettenchor u. a. all Bach passions, the Christmas Oratorio and Magnificat, Mendelssohn's “Lobgesang”, Stravinsky's “Psalmensinfonie”, the Mozart Requiem, Max Bruch's “Moses” and numerous Bach cantatas. Of particular importance in the choral work of the motet choir in Ulm is the staging of the annual oath concert in cooperation with the Philharmonic Orchestra of the City of Ulm and the Ulm Theater .

During the rehearsals, the choir is supervised by Annette Küttenbaum. Since 2010 it has been under the direction of Friedemann Johannes Wieland .

history

The so-called Münster Choir existed at Ulm Minster as early as the middle of the 19th century. During the bombing raid on Um on March 2, 1945, the archive with all the evidence was destroyed. A handwritten note documenting this has been preserved (will be added), as well as individual volumes of choir music from the 1880s. In 1956, Hans Jakob Haller re-founded the motet choir and the youth choir. The rehearsal work and the rebuilding ran parallel to the cathedral choir, which disbanded over the years. At the same time, the weekly Motette concert series was introduced at Ulm Minster, which was alternately designed by the two newly founded choirs.

Barbara Haller directed the choir work with the young singers. In 1957, she also established the tradition of the crib competition. Since 1957 the Christmas story has traditionally been performed every year (with one interruption) in the same sequence of old Christmas carols on the Saturday before the Third Advent in the choir of the minster.

Both choirs grew considerably under Edgar Rabsch . A special feature of this development was on the one hand the complete performance of all Bach cantatas and oratorios, on the other hand the youth choir reached its heyday, which resulted in annual and increasingly international concert tours. Numerous world premieres of his compositions were also given.

After Ergar Rabsch's sudden death in 1990, Friedrich Fröschle took over the management of the motet choir and responsibility for all choral work at the Münster in 1991. The children and youth choir work was in the hands of Christina Rabsch-Dörr, Evelyn Kramer and Verena Schwarz.

After Friedrich Fröschle retired, Friedemann Johannes Wieland took over the musical direction at Ulm Minster from 2010. In 2011 he founded the 'vocal ensemble ulmer münster' and the "Days for Early Music" (always on the first weekend in October).

Iris Wieland was in charge of the children's choirs from 2010 to 2015, and Stephanie Dinkelaker has directed them since 2016.
