The district (District Municipality) Motheo was until 2011 part of the province of Free State in South Africa . Around 800,000 people lived in an area of ​​13,997 km² (as of 2007). The capital was Bloemfontein . The district name is the Sesotho word for foundation stone .

In 2011 Mangaung became part of the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality of the same name , while Mantsopa came to the Thabo Mofutsanyana district and Naledi to Xhariep . Naledi also joined the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality in 2016.
