Mothes Island is a 150 m long island off the east coast of Adelaide Island west of the Antarctic Peninsula . It is right in front of Mothes Point .
The Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey took surveys in September 1948 . Aerial photographs were taken between 1956 and 1957 during the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition . The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 2016 as in 1960 the headland of the same name. It is named after the German glaciologist Hans Mothes (1902–1989), who carried out the first seismic soundings of a glacier in Austria in 1926 .
