Moth from Wipshausen

The moth of Wipshausen is an Outbound Motte (motte) in an oak grove of Erseniederung southeast of the village Wipshausen , in the municipality of Edemissen in the district of Peine in Lower Saxony .

description

The Motte is the oldest castle hill in the Peiner Land. It is a round hill surrounded by a moat .

The tower hill castle , built in the 10th century, presumably served the villagers as a protective fortress against the Slavic Wends , which during this time increasingly advanced into the area west of the Elbe . The distinctive castle hill and the dried up moat are still preserved from the former castle complex. The castle site is now a protected ground monument .

Remarks

At the end of the 1980s, the ground monument was described by the Institute for Monument Preservation in Hanover as "the most beautiful facility of its kind in Lower Saxony". In addition to Peine Castle , it is the largest surface monument in the region, as well as the oldest castle complex in the district.
