The Mount Akutan is a 1,303  m high stratovolcano of the Aleutian Range on the Alaska Peninsula . Mount Akutan is one of the most active volcanoes in the region.

Description and major eruptions

Its summit consists of a 2 km wide and up to 365 meters deep caldera . Two outbreak centers are on the northwest flank. A cinder cone produced a lava flow in 1852, which enlarged the coastline and formed "Lava Point". The caldera was formed during an explosive eruption around 1,600 years ago and contains at least three crater lakes. The active cinder cone in the northeast part of the caldera is the source of frequent explosive eruptions in the recent past (also known as lava leakage). In 1978 a lava flow crossed a narrow breakthrough in the northern part of the caldera wall and almost reached the coast. There are some fumaroles at the bottom of the caldera. Hot springs can be found in the northeast of the caldera and along the coast at Hot Springs Bay . There are several thermal springs in the area around the volcano .

Earlier eruptions, some of them severe, were measured using the radiocarbon method to 7620 ± 300 BC.
