Mount Haddington is a 1,630 m high shield volcano in the center of James Ross Island east of the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula .
The British polar explorer James Clark Ross discovered the mountain on December 31, 1842 during his Antarctic expedition (1839-1843). He named it after Thomas Hamilton, 9th Earl of Haddington (1780-1858), then First Lord of the Admiralty .
