The Mount Hampton is a 3323 m high, extinct shield volcano in the West Antarctic Marie Byrd Land .
The mountain was formed approximately 8.6 to 11.7 million years ago. The external appearance of the volcano is impressive, because most of its summit is occupied by an approximately six kilometers wide trough-shaped caldera , which was created by the collapse of the magma chamber , which was emptied after the latest eruption . Today this is mostly filled with ice.
Mount Hampton is the northernmost of the extinct volcanoes that together make up the Executive Committee Range . Participants of the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939–1941) discovered it on December 15, 1940 during an overflight. He was named after Ruth Hampton (1883-1963), an employee of the US Department of the Interior and member of the executive committee of the United States Antarctic Service .
