Monte Mabu

The Monte Mabu , English Mount Mabu , is a 1700 m high mountain in the province of Zambezia in northern Mozambique that has only been known since 2005 .

Reports from the first scientific expedition described the area as possibly "the largest medium-altitude forest in southern Africa". The British expedition to the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew reported on their return from Mozambique that the mountain , which they discovered only with the help of Google Earth , and its approximately 7000 hectare wooded area, which was previously only known to locals, offered an extremely high level of biodiversity . They reported new species of insects and snakes, including three new species of butterflies and one of the real vipers . They encountered stump- tailed chameleons , bluebugs and olive nectar birds . Other reports spoke of "at least ten new species ... all kinds of animals." Monte Mabu is also home to at least seven species of birds that are threatened worldwide.
