Aerial photographs of the US Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (1947-1948) and the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition (1956-1957) were used to map it. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1960 after the Austrian geographer Fritz Machatschek (1876–1957).
