Mount Michael is the central, active and 990 m high volcano of Saunders Island in the archipelago of the South Sandwich Islands .

The British navigator James Cook discovered Saunders Island in 1775. The first mapping of the mountain probably goes back to Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen in 1820. Scientists from the British Discovery Investigations surveyed and named it in 1930. It is named after Michael John de Courcy Carey (* 1916), son of Commander William Melvin Carey (1887 – unknown), the captain of the RRS Discovery II at the time of the measurements.

In 2019, British scientists were able to use satellite photos to prove that there is a lava lake in the crater of Mount Michael .
