Zweiffel Castle

The ground monument Burg Zweiffel extends in the area of Burg Zweiffel and the service yard of Burg Zweiffel in the Herrenstrunden district of Bergisch Gladbach in the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis . Both parts originally belonged together as a moated castle. Around 1850 they were separated from each other by the construction of the road from Mülheim to Wipperfürth .

history

The medieval castle complex was first mentioned in connection with the Knights of Strune in 1251. This later resulted in the name Strunde . Towards the end of the 14th century, the von Zweiffel men became the new owners of the property. The building still bears her name today. In 1581 the history of the von Zweiffel family ended at the castle. The daughter Marie von Zweiffel, who had meanwhile become the owner of the castle estate, married and took over the name of her husband Konrad von Herzbeck, who from now on called himself Herr von Strunden . The couple divided the property into two parts in 1585. Two thirds went to Friedrich von Schaffhausen, one third to the Miseloher bailiff Ludwig von Metternich.

After the division, the succession of ownership changed. From 1663 the property was mentioned again as a unit after the other owner had apparently been resigned. The Birckmanns were now the sole owners. That year they built the baroque moated castle . A description of the property is available for 1821. The castle house, surrounded by water, was part of the castle estate and was connected to the farm yard by a drawbridge . In addition there were the farm buildings, the tenant house and a barn as well as stables.

Division by road construction

Major changes resulted from the construction of the road from Mülheim to Wipperfürth in 1848–1849. The old ponds and ditches were filled in and the entire property was cut through from west to east. The mansion now stood north of the street, the farm buildings on the south side. It has remained so to this day. The ground monument, however, extends to the entire property.
