Service yard of Burg Zweiffel

The former farmyard of Zweiffel Castle

The service yard of Burg Zweiffel was part of the former ensemble Burg Zweiffel . Today it is a residential building in the Herrenstrunden district of Bergisch Gladbach in the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis .

history

Today's half-timbered building with the directly adjacent Herkenrather Tor is an essential part of the Zweiffel castle complex. It dates from around 1660. In the years 1848/1849 the road from Bergisch Gladbach to Dürscheid that still exists today was built through Herrenstrunden. He shared the courtyard of Zweiffel Castle. As a result, the originally homogeneous character of the structure was lost. A connection between the two parts can no longer be recognized at first glance.

The Herkenrath Gate on the southern side of the mountain is a relic from the earliest days of the complex. It was part of the former fortification. During restoration work, animal bones were found in the northern pillar as the remains of a building sacrifice. Remnants of the old boundary wall with a thickness of up to one and a half meters also came to light.
