The Mount Rolleston in, language of the Māori originally Te Tara o Tama called, is a mountain in the Southern Alps in the region Canterbury on the South Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

The mountain was sighted in 1864 by the surveyor Arthur Dudley Dobson on his search for a route to the gold fields of the west coast through the Alps and named by him after the superintendent of the province of Canterbury William Rolleston at the time .

geography

The 2275  m high mountain is located about 50 km southeast of Hokitika , on the west coast, and 3.7 km west of Arthur's Pass and the New Zealand State Highway 73, which leads to the north . It is part of the Jellicoe Ridge , which stretches here for around 20 km in a north-south direction. Directly south below the summit is a small glacier, 1.14 km long and 0.87 km wide, called Crow Glacier .

The mountain range is located in Arthur's Pass National Park and is on the western edge of the park.

Alpine hiking

Ordinary hikers can approach the mountain from the Jacks Hut parking lot on New Zealand State Highway 73 via the westbound Bealey Valley Track , which extends 1.2 km through the valley and allows a hike of around 25 minutes. Another way to see the mountain is to approach the mountain from the northeast via the 45-minute Otira Valley Track . Alpine equipment is then required to climb the mountain on both climbs, as the summit is covered by snow and ice all year round.

The first ascent of Mount Rolleston was made by mountaineers H. Thomson and J. Gilligan in 1912.
