Mount Southern is a 1000 m high mountain or Nunatak in the West Antarctic Ellsworthland . It rises 2.5 km northeast of Mount Harry and 22.5 km southeast of FitzGerald Bluffs .
The American polar explorer Lincoln Ellsworth photographed him on November 23, 1935 during an overflight. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) mapped it on the basis of its own surveys and aerial photographs of the United States Navy from 1961 to 1966. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it in 1968 after the American topography engineer Merle Everett Southern (* 1937), who was involved in surveying work for the USGS in Marie-Byrd-Land from 1967 to 1968 .
