The Mount Terror is a large extinct shield volcano , the eastern part of the Ross Island forms. It is mostly covered with ice and snow.
Mount Terror is the second largest of the three volcanoes that make up Ross Island, and is surpassed by Mount Erebus, about 30 km to the west . The volcanic cone, which consists mainly of loose volcanic material with a basaltic composition, has numerous secondary craters on its flanks. The rocks of the summit region have not yet been explored; Age dating of samples from deeper regions resulted in an age between 1.75 and 0.82 million years. A recent volcanic activity could not be detected at Mount Terror.
The volcano was named in 1841 by James Clark Ross after the HMS Terror , the second ship in his expeditionary fleet. Its flagship gave its name to Mount Erebus.
The first ascent of the 3262 m high mountain took place in 1959 by a New Zealand group.
