As "The Australian Nugget" , starting in 2008, "Australian Kangaroo" is called an Australian gold coin , by the Perth Mint is embossed.
The first issue took place in 1986 as a collective issue in proof , since 1987 it has also been minted as an investment coin in the denominations of 5, 15, 25, 50 and 100 Australian dollars or 1 ⁄ 20 , 1 ⁄ 10 , ¼, ½ and 1 troy ounce . From 1989 there were still the particularly large denominations of 2 and 10 ounces, as well as 1 kilogram, offered as Large Australian Nugget . The fineness is 999.9 / 1000, so the coin is made of fine gold .

Both sides of the coin contain different motifs, changing annually.
The front of each of the first four years shows extraordinary natural gold nuggets found in Australia as a motif , which were either particularly large or had a special "find" story. From 1990 the motif changed, also annually. It now shows pictures of kangaroos. Since the 2008 edition, the lettering has changed from "The Australian Nugget" to "Australian Kangaroo" . The year of issue is now on the reverse of the coin. The motif was changed purely for marketing reasons, since coins with animal motifs simply sell better than coins with the image of a natural gold nugget.
The obverse of all coins from 2 ounces adorns the same motif of the "Red Kangaroo" every year.
The back, on which the year was stamped until 2008, is provided with various images of Queen Elizabeth II .
Biggest gold coin in the world
In October 2011, the Perth Mint presented a kangaroo with a fine weight of one ton. The coin has a diameter of almost 80 cm and a thickness of over 12 cm, weighs 1.012 t (1012 kg) and is made of 24 carat gold (99.99%). The face value is 1 million Australian dollars.

As an investment coin, the Kangaroo is sold at the bank counter at prices that are updated daily. The coin can be purchased from online shops on the Internet at constantly updated prices. The coin is the official currency in Australia.

Since 2010 the Perth Mint has also minted a silver version of the Kangaroo coin.
