The Libertad ("freedom") is an investment coin made of gold and silver that has been manufactured by the Mexican mint Casa de Moneda de Mexico since 1981 . In contrast to most other investment coins, it has no fixed face value ; this is set anew every day based on the current precious metal price.
description
Victoria , the goddess of victory, symbolizes the independence of Mexico, is depicted on the front of the Libertad . The motif was based on the El Ángel de la Independencia monument in Mexico City. The Mexican steppe landscape with the two volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl is shown in the background . In addition, the size of the coin, the fineness and the year of issue are indicated on this side of the coin. In 1996 the motif was revised. The perspective was changed and the laurel wreath in the hand of Victoria was omitted.
The reverse of the coin shows the national coat of arms of Mexico and the country code "Estados Unidos Mexicanos" ("United States of Mexico"). Since 2000, coins from one ounce onwards have had a new reverse. This shows the national coat of arms of Mexico surrounded by ten historical forms of the coat of arms.
The edge of the coins was initially smooth and bore the inscription “Independencia y Libertad” (“Independence and Freedom”). The edge has been fluted since 1990.
Executions
The investment coin is available in gold and silver. The gold version initially had a fineness of 91.7%, alloyed with silver. In 1991 the fineness was increased to 99.9%. The fineness of the Libertad in silver is 99.9% throughout. The other parameters are listed in the following tables.
