Mount Thorarinsson is a 860 m high mountain on the Foyn coast of Graham Land on the Antarctic Peninsula . It rises up on the southern flank of the mouth of the Hess glacier . The mountain forms the end point of a rocky ridge emanating from the central plateau and is a striking landmark when viewed from the Larsen Ice Shelf .
Aerial photographs of this stretch of coast were taken by the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939-1941), the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (1947-1948) and in 1968 by the United States Navy . The Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey carried out surveys between 1947 and 1948. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named the mountain in 1975 after the Icelandic glaciologist Sigurður Þórarinsson (Sigurd Thorarinsson, 1912–1983).
